When Is the Best Time to Launch a Game on Steam in 2027?
Your launch date is one of the few marketing decisions you only get to make once. Get it right and your wishlists convert into a strong first week, which feeds Steam's visibility systems and keeps your game on players' radar. Get it wrong and you can launch into a storewide sale, a crowded festival or the shadow of a blockbuster, and watch months of wishlist building turn into a quiet launch day.
The good news for 2027 is that you no longer have to guess. Valve has published the full Steam event calendar for the first half of the year, covering two seasonal sales, eleven themed fests and two editions of Steam Next Fest.
In this guide we break down every confirmed date, the launch windows we recommend, the weeks to avoid, and the planning factors that studios launching from Asia into Western markets often miss.
The Confirmed Steam Event Calendar: Winter 2026 to Summer 2027
Here is everything Valve has confirmed so far. Bookmark it, because your launch plan should be built around these dates.

| Steam Winter Sale 2026 | 17 December 2026 – 4 January 2027 | Seasonal sale |
| Desktop Companion Fest | 14 – 18 January | Themed fest |
| Shop Keeper Fest | 25 January – 1 February | Themed fest |
| Sheep Fest | 4 – 8 February | Themed fest |
| Couch Co-Op Fest | 8 – 15 February | Themed fest |
| Steam Next Fest: February 2027 | 22 February – 1 March | Next Fest |
| Rhythm Fest | 8 – 15 March | Themed fest |
| Steam Spring Sale 2027 | 18 – 25 March | Seasonal sale |
| Dinos vs. Robots Fest | 29 March – 5 April | Themed fest |
| Racing Fest | 12 – 19 April | Themed fest |
| Witch Fest | 22 – 26 April | Themed fest |
| Fighting Fest | 26 April – 3 May | Themed fest |
| Real-Time Strategy Fest | 10 – 17 May | Themed fest |
| Mountaineering Fest | 31 May – 3 June | Themed fest |
| Steam Next Fest: June 2027 | 14 – 21 June | Next Fest |
| Steam Summer Sale 2027 | 24 June – 8 July | Seasonal sale |
Dates for the second half of 2027, including the Autumn Sale, Winter Sale and the October Next Fest, have not been announced yet. If you are planning a late-2027 launch, build your plan on last year's pattern but treat it as provisional until Valve confirms.
Why Your Steam Launch Date Matters So Much
Steam rewards momentum. A strong opening week, driven by wishlist conversions, sales velocity and player reviews, gives your game the best chance of surfacing in places like New & Trending, Top Sellers and personalised recommendations. A soft opening week is very hard to recover from.
Your launch date affects that momentum in three ways:
- Competition for attention. During seasonal sales, players browse discounts rather than new releases, and the front page fills with sale content.
- Wishlist notifications. When you launch, Steam emails the players who wishlisted your game. Those emails land better when inboxes are not flooded with sale announcements.
- Media and creator bandwidth. Press and content creators have finite capacity. If a major release lands the same week, your coverage and creator uptake suffer.
The Best Steam Launch Windows in the First Half of 2027
Window 1: Mid-January to Early February
Once the Winter Sale ends on 4 January, the store resets. Players are returning with gift cards and Christmas money, and the release schedule is usually lighter than in autumn.
Best for: Games with a solid wishlist base that do not need a Next Fest demo boost.
Watch out for: Launching too soon after the Winter Sale ends. Give press and creators a week to come back from the holidays, which makes the second half of January the sweet spot.
Window 2: Two to Three Weeks After February Next Fest
This is the classic play. Run your demo in Steam Next Fest from 22 February to 1 March, capture the wishlist spike, then launch while that interest is still fresh.
That points to a launch between roughly 8 and 16 March, before the Spring Sale begins on 18 March.
Best for: Indie and mid-size games with a strong demo that can benefit from Next Fest exposure.
Watch out for: Squeezing your launch too close to the Spring Sale. A launch on 16 or 17 March gives you only a day or two of clean visibility before the store switches into sale mode.
Window 3: April, After the Spring Sale
Once the Spring Sale finishes on 25 March, April offers a relatively clear stretch. It also contains several genre fests, which can work in your favour.
Best for: Racing, fighting and witch-themed games that can launch one to three weeks ahead of their matching fest and then benefit from the genre spotlight.
Watch out for: Steam's discount rules. Check the current Steamworks discounting documentation before you plan your launch discount, because cooldown periods can stop you discounting during a fest that falls too close to launch.
Window 4: Mid-to-Late May
May is often overlooked, which is exactly why it can work. The Real-Time Strategy Fest (10 – 17 May) is a natural target for strategy titles, and the broader store is calmer before June's summer showcase season.
Best for: Strategy games and titles that want a quieter launch before summer noise.
Steam Launch Dates to Avoid in 2027
During Any Seasonal Sale
Avoid launching between 17 December and 4 January, 18 and 25 March, and 24 June and 8 July. Players are hunting discounts on games they already know, your full-price game is competing against thousands of reductions, and your wishlist emails arrive alongside a wave of sale notifications.
The Week Immediately After February Next Fest
It is tempting to launch the moment Next Fest ends. But hundreds of other games are trying the same thing, and you lose the time you need to fix the feedback your demo just generated. Two to three weeks later is usually the better balance.
Late June
Between June Next Fest (14 – 21 June), the Summer Sale (24 June – 8 July) and the summer showcase season, late June is one of the noisiest periods of the year. Use it for announcements, trailers and wishlist building, not for launch day.
The Same Week as a Blockbuster in Your Genre
Track the major release calendar for your genre. Big releases do not just compete for players; they absorb press coverage, creator schedules and ad inventory. Grand Theft Auto VI's late-2026 release shows how much the industry reshapes its calendar around a single launch, and genre-specific heavyweights have the same effect at a smaller scale.
How Many Weeks Out Should You Plan?
A launch date is not a single decision. It anchors your entire campaign. As a rough guide:
- 6 months out: Lock your target window and your Next Fest plan. Steam only lets a game take part in one Next Fest, so choose which one carefully.
- 3 months out: Confirm the date publicly, start creator outreach and plan your paid media flighting around wishlist growth.
- 6 weeks out: Brief creators, finalise trailers and store page assets, and set up tracking so you can attribute wishlists by channel.
- Launch week: Concentrate paid media, creator content and community activity into the first 72 hours, when Steam's visibility signals matter most.
Extra Calendar Factors for Asian Studios Launching in the West
For studios in China, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia, the Steam calendar is only half the picture. These are the factors we see trip up teams most often.
Lunar New Year Falls Before February Next Fest
Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027, a little over two weeks before February Next Fest starts. If your team breaks for the holiday, your demo build, store page assets and creator materials need to be finished before then, not during it.
Launch Time, Not Just Launch Date
Launching at midnight local time in Asia often means going live in the middle of the night for Western players. Choose a release time that lands during the morning in North America and the afternoon or evening in Europe, so your launch-day visibility overlaps with peak Western traffic and your community team is online when players arrive.
Western Holidays Shape Attention
US Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are high-spend periods, but they are also the most crowded. Western media and creators slow down over the holidays, which affects coverage. Plan around these dates the same way you would plan around Golden Week or Lunar New Year at home.
Culturalize the Launch Moment
A launch date is also a creative moment. Trailers, store page copy and creator briefs that feel native to Western audiences convert more wishlists into day-one purchases than translated assets. That is the difference between localization and culturalization.
Your Steam Launch Date Checklist
Before you lock your date, check that you can answer yes to each of these:
- Does the date avoid all three seasonal sales?
- Is there at least a two-week gap after your Next Fest appearance?
- Have you checked the release calendar for major games in your genre?
- Have you confirmed your launch discount plan against Steamworks discount rules?
- Does your launch time land during Western peak hours?
- Have you accounted for your team's own holidays and production schedule?
- Is your paid media and creator plan built backwards from the date?
FAQ
What is the best day of the week to launch a game on Steam?
Most studios launch midweek, typically Tuesday to Thursday. That gives you a full working week for press coverage, creator content and community support, and lets your first weekend benefit from launch-week momentum.
Should I launch my game during a Steam sale?
Generally, no. During seasonal sales, players focus on discounts and the store front is dominated by sale content, which makes it harder for a new full-price release to stand out. Launching shortly before or well after a seasonal sale is usually the better choice.
How long after Steam Next Fest should I launch?
Two to three weeks after Next Fest is a strong default. It keeps the wishlist spike fresh while giving you time to act on demo feedback. For February 2027, that means a launch window of roughly 8 to 16 March, before the Spring Sale starts on 18 March.
When are the Steam sales in 2027?
Valve has confirmed the Steam Spring Sale for 18 – 25 March 2027 and the Steam Summer Sale for 24 June – 8 July 2027. The Winter Sale 2026 runs from 17 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. Dates for the 2027 Autumn and Winter Sales have not been announced yet.
When is Steam Next Fest in 2027?
The confirmed 2027 editions are 22 February – 1 March and 14 – 21 June. An October edition is expected based on previous years but has not been confirmed.
How many wishlists do I need before launching on Steam?
There is no single magic number, and benchmarks vary by genre and price point. What matters more is wishlist momentum heading into launch and how well your store page converts those wishlists into purchases. A clear launch date helps you build that momentum deliberately.
